Seismological Observatory as an independent University research
institution within the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje,
is an unique institution in Republic of Macedonia which performs seismological
activity. Seismological Observatory is composed of five sections: microseismics,
macroseismics, telemetry,
seismological instrumentation and computer laboratory.
With network composed of analog and digital seismological stations, the Observatory
systematically, instrumentally monitors
the seismic activity on the territory of the Republic of Macedonia and Balkan
seismic active regions, and the teleseismic earthquakes.
Instrumental and macroseismic data are collected, archived, analyzed and published
in seismological bulletins and catalogues in order of international seismological
data exchange, and for the purpose of science, educational system and protection
from earthquake activity. Seismological Observatory provides scientific research,
educational and practical activities in seismology and geophysics, continually
from it's establishment in 1957.
The first seismological station on the territory of the Republic of Macedonia was founded in 1955, and with the complete installation of the seismological instruments the station started to operate in 1957. After the earthquake in Skopje 1963, and with the installation of two new seismological stations in Valandovo (1966) and Ohrid (1967), Seismological station in Skopje became an Observatory.
In 1992 Seismological Observatory started to realize the Program for Development and Installation the Telemetric Network of Seismological Stations in Republic of Macedonia. The first telemetric network (Skopje, Ohrid, Valandovo) with digital telemetric seismological stations was reinstated in 1994, so today in the complex of the Observatory work six digital telemetric stations .
In the field of science-research activity Seismological Observatory has been involved in and has carried out many local and international projects, and also Seismological Observatory has published a lot of monographs, articles and manuscripts collected in the fond of the Observatory.
In the Seismological Observatory theoretically and practical are held teaching activities in the range of secondary educational system on the request of the particular school in Republic of Macedonia, and also for the postgraduate (master and doctoral) studies on seismological engineering and engineering seismology in Skopje. In professional and popular journals Seismological Observatory publishes articles about the basic and directions of seismologic development and educational purpose for protection from earthquakes.
Seismological Observatory realizes it's working program in this fields: seismic zonic and microseismic zonic, geology, engineering seismology, Urban plan, construction, rules for aseismic construction, ecology and software for many different problems in seismology; in realization of many local and international projects; in permanent seismological researches.
